‘Angel of the North’ album review
Fiona Lander and Paul Mason have been working together for some three years (you may have seen them live, they do lots of pub gigs throughout the north east and Cumbria) and already have an album and an EP behind them. They describe ‘Angel’ as a ‘mini folk album of 8 songs and tunes inspired by their return to the North’ but that tells about 1% of the story. Landermason are obviously highly accomplished musicians with real training and real understanding of their genre. Fiona plays piano, saxophone, whistle and clarinet as well as providing achingly clear vocals (put her together with Tony McNally and you could put the Northern Sinfonia out of business), Paul brings distinctive guitars and vocals to this unique blend. Here I’m forced to introduce the ‘T’ word, Landermason are incredibly tasteful, the self-penned tracks stay in a place where folk provides the theme but jazz determines the style – no woolly jumpers and beards!
