...folk provides the theme but jazz determines the style Landermason Reviews
September 2003HOLLEY'S COMET
LanderMason at The Kings Head, Allendale (Live review)
Lovely little venue, especially when the fire’s lit, the bars open and the ashtrays are put out. I don’t do blow by blow descriptions of concerts but try to give a general description of the event and this gig really impressed me. The musicianship was outrageously good. Paul, on guitars was sublime with a style that fused classical, jazz and folk and pop successfully. Fiona, (multi-tasking as only women can do) on keyboard, clarinet, whistle, recorder and saxophones, slickly swapped from instruments to vocals, back and forth, precisely and seamlessly. Solo and harmonized voices were spot on, varying in intensity and giving great colour and tone to the night. The material was mainly their own compositions, tightly arranged, with melody and rhythm nicely reflecting the lyrics in a pop/jazz fusion with a little bit of folk. The highlight was the fabulous ‘Ebony’, sexily arranged and performed. They’re doing a local tour and I really recommend going to see them.
